A. E. HOPWOOD states:-

I am 23 years old, wireless operator of London,

Certificate No.10272 1 Kr. Marconi Standard issued 13th

December, 1920, by Secretary, General Post Office, London. I have

served in this ship since 12th April, 1923, I joined Marconi

Company 12th April, 1922, and started on foreign service on 9th

June, 1923. First on S.S. "Seang Bee" and then on this ship. At

about 01.30 hours G.M.T. on 13th January I was sitting in my

cabin having breakfast, I was on watch, and had the receiving phones on my head connected by a long wire to the apparatus. The first thing unusual I heard were whistles, footsteps and shouting and I heard a gɛng of men coming to the boat deck. Some went

forward to the Officers' mess and some came to my cabin. The

next thing I heard was a revolver shot fired just behind my head. I turned round, and by that time there were about 6 men in my

cabin and 6 on the deck immediately outside. All were armed,

those inside with automatics and some of those outside with

revolvers, some had automatics. They asked me in pidgin English if I had a revolver. I said that I had no arms. One of the men

took the receivers off my head and went to the operating room which is next, connected by a doorway. Some of them began open- ing the drawers, asking me if I had any money. Less than 5 minutes after this they made me go along to the chart room where a man stood guard over me with a hatchet, 5 minutes after which

I was taken to the bridge, a few minutes after that the Captain came along. While they were taking me out of my cabin the man who took the phones cut the aerial lead, but I did not see any further damage being done to the wireless gear. After this I was kept under guard the whole time and was only once allowed back to my cabin in order to obtain warm clothing. At about 15.00 hours on the 15th inst. an armed pirate escorted me down and sat in the operating room. He was the chief pirate and after a short while he left and another man took his place. I obtained my clothes, locked the door and offered him the key
